This week’s goal was to learn about our icon of Abraham and Isaac in our church’s narthex. (Genesis 22: 1-19)

In November, our parish has a “Youth Sunday” where our Sunday School students have an opportunity to do tasks around the church just like everyone else. Each class is assigned something to do for that Sunday. This year, the 3rd/4th grade class was asked to share a project in our Sunday School hallway. This week, we completed the 3rd section of our 4 part project.

Week 9:

In addition to the the teacher’s outline, you will need the following for this lesson:

  • A Bible
  • A second sheet of 12×18 construction paper
  • Markers
  • Scissors
  • Print out of the icon included in the teacher’s outline, for each student (if you are doing the activity)

Icon of Abraham Offering Isaac – Genesis 22: 1-19

Our class is learning about our four large Old Testament icons in the narthex of our parish as part of our Youth Sunday project. It is an opportunity to connect our lessons on the Old Testament with learning about the Old Testament icons in our church.

“So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey; and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he split firewood for the whole burnt offering, and arose and went to the place God told him. Then on the third day Abraham lifted his eyes and saw the place afar off. Thus Abraham said to his young men, ‘Stay here with the donkey; the lad and I will go yonder and worship, and we will come back to you.‘ ” (Genesis 22:3-5)

“So Abraham took the firewood of the whole burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son. Then he took the fire in his hand, and a knife, and the two of them went together.” (Genesis 22:6)

Then Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, ‘Abraham! Abraham!’ So he said, ‘Here I am.’ He then replied, ‘Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him, for now I know you fear God, since for My sake you have not spared your beloved son.’ Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him a ram was caught in a thicket by its horns. So he brought it for a whole burnt offering in place of his son. Thus Abraham called the name of the place The-Lord-Has-Appeared; as it is said to this day, ‘In the mountain the Lord was seen.’ ” (Genesis 22:10-14)
