Week 5: Donuts with Ageless Wonders

Goals:
1. Provide an opportunity for our older generation to share about their relationship with Christ with our younger generation

2. Miracles did not just happen in the Bible. They happen everyday – sometimes subtly and sometimes not so subtly.

Notes for the Teacher: This lesson sets the groundwork for our lesson in Week 11 – although we will continuously discuss miracles throughout the year.

We hear about the miracles that happened in the Bible and we also learn about them through the lives of the saints – but they also happen in our own lives as well. Sometimes we recognize them and sometimes we don’t. God is with us every single day and our children find great comfort in hearing about God’s interaction with us through people they know in our communities.

In our parish, our children heard about crying icons, persecution in Asia Minor and safe passages to the United States, moments during the Divine Liturgy when something amazing happened, and more! You may need to get to know people during fellowship hour in order to find enough people to share miracles that happened in their lives. Let them know you want to get to know them better and also your goal of finding people to tell a story to the children in your church school. You’ll be amazed yourself at how many people have something to share! Then use your best discernment for placing these adults with the appropriate age group.

In our parish, Ageless Wonders are the adults aged 50+. We wanted to engaged the older generation with the younger one with their experiences. We chose to advertise this event with donuts because we had a couple of classes that regularly went to the hall before class to see if there were any donuts that Sunday. We made a point to have donuts in the classrooms specifically for the kids that Sunday.

Everyday Wonders

Fr. Michael Oleksa is a wonderful storyteller (and you can find him on YouTube as well). This book is a collection of “Everyday Wonders” and is an option for yourself or if you truly cannot find anyone at your parish to share their miracles.
