{"id":4688,"date":"2015-04-20T16:21:24","date_gmt":"2015-04-20T16:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/illumination-learning.com\/main\/?p=4688"},"modified":"2015-04-20T16:21:24","modified_gmt":"2015-04-20T16:21:24","slug":"traditions-planting-basil-for-the-elevation-of-the-holy-cross","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/illumination-learning.com\/main\/2015\/04\/20\/traditions-planting-basil-for-the-elevation-of-the-holy-cross\/","title":{"rendered":"traditions: Planting Basil for the Elevation of the Holy Cross"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the many beautiful aspects of Orthodoxy is the rhythm of seasons year after year. \u00a0As the buds start appearing on the trees and bushes outside, I know it&#8217;s time to start thinking about my little garden and to remember the story of Saint Helen&#8217;s pilgrimage to the Holy Land in her late age.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>We recently moved to a new home. \u00a0Since we know we&#8217;re not going to be living here long, I&#8217;m unwilling to invest a lot of time and money into setting up another <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Square-Foot-Gardening-Second-Revolutionary\/dp\/1591865484\/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;keywords=square%20foot%20garden&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;qid=1429114911&amp;sr=8-1&amp;tag=pilgrimageoft-20&amp;linkId=EFVPGWBQJUBBUWCH\" target=\"_blank\">Square Foot Garden<\/a>\u00a0for just a short period of time. \u00a0(This is the best and most successful method of gardening I&#8217;ve used over the past 10 years.) \u00a0So, my little gardener and I made sure to bring our best pots with us when we moved along with\u00a0several large buckets of our well tended soil from our previous garden beds. We&#8217;re ready to set up our tiny potted garden as part of our springtime rhythm and learning!<\/p>\n<p><a plant in our garden each spring is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.seedsnow.com\/collections\/basil-seeds\" target=\"_blank\">basil<\/a>. \u00a0We do this not only for use in our\u00a0summertime dishes but also to harvest it for the <a href=\"http:\/\/orthodoxwiki.org\/Elevation_of_the_Holy_Cross\" target=\"_blank\">Feast Day of the Elevation of the Holy Cross<\/a> on September 14th. \u00a0We bring our basil to church with us, along with many other gardeners, as we remember how Saint Helen found the Life-Giving Cross of Christ under a mound where sweet basil was growing. \u00a0Three crosses were unearthed where it was said that Christ was crucified. \u00a0In order to discover which one was the cross Christ was crucified on, an ailing woman kiss each of the crosses and was cured as she kissed Christ&#8217;s cross. \u00a0The story also tells of a funeral procession passing by and a\u00a0dead man was placed against each of the three crosses. \u00a0When he touched the Life-Giving Cross, he came back to life!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/illumination-learning.com\/main\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/DSC_2588.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" where the Cross was discovered, St. Helen had found a hitherto unknown flower of rare beauty and fragrance, which has been named &#8220;Vasiliko,&#8221; or\u00a0<a class=\"extiw\" title=\"w:List of basil cultivars\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_basil_cultivars\">Basil<\/a>, meaning the flower of royalty. Note that the word &#8220;Vasiliko&#8221; means &#8220;of the King,&#8221; since the word &#8220;Basileus&#8221; in Greek means &#8220;King&#8221;; so, the plant Vasiliko, Basil, is tied to the Precious Cross of the King of Glory, our Lord Jesus Christ. \u00a0&#8211; Orthodoxwiki<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p>Each year, as we plant our basil seeds in our home garden, we\u00a0re-tell the story of Saint Helen finding Jesus&#8217; cross under the sweet, fragrant basil. \u00a0In our humble garden, we\u00a0are living our faith as we pass on this\u00a0illuminating tradition to the next generation, our
